BB Paper Gun v24 — Quick Player Guide

BB Paper Gun is an arcade-style air combat game about paper aircraft, real-world-inspired jets, bombers, helicopters, missiles, carriers, and a lot of carefully balanced chaos.

The goal of each level is simple: destroy all enemy aircraft.
However, enemies do not only start in the air. Most of them spawn from enemy aircraft carriers, so every level can be approached in different ways.

Main Objective

A wave is completed when all enemy aircraft are destroyed.

At the beginning of a wave, several enemy aircraft are already airborne, including a large bomber boss. Enemy carriers will continue launching additional aircraft or helicopters every 30 seconds until those carriers are destroyed.

This creates two main threats:

  1. The aircraft already in the sky
  2. The enemy carriers that keep launching reinforcements

Main Strategies

There are three good ways to play:

1. Carrier-first strategy

Choose an aircraft with strong ground-attack capability and destroy the enemy carriers first.
Once the carriers are gone, no more aircraft will launch from them, and you can clean up the remaining enemies more calmly.

Good aircraft for this strategy include:

  • Saab JAS 39 Gripen with guided glide bombs
  • A-10 Thunderbolt with heavy cannon damage and glide bombs

2. Air-superiority strategy

Choose a strong fighter and destroy enemy aircraft faster than the carriers can launch new ones.

Good aircraft for this strategy include:

  • F-22 Raptor with 10 AIM-9 missiles and triple-lock capability
  • Eurofighter Typhoon with 6 IRIS-T missiles and dual-lock capability

3. Allrounder strategy

Choose a balanced aircraft and fight both air and sea targets.
This is usually the safest playstyle because you can react to whatever becomes dangerous first.

Player Aircraft

Each player aircraft has specific strengths and weaknesses. The balancing is designed so that every aircraft is useful, but each one plays differently.

The aircraft are inspired by their real-world roles where possible.

F-22 Raptor

The F-22 is a pure air-superiority fighter.

Strengths:

  • 10 AIM-9 missiles
  • Can lock up to 3 air targets at once
  • Very strong for quickly clearing enemy aircraft
  • No bombs

Best use:
Destroy aircraft quickly and prevent the sky from filling up with enemies.

Eurofighter Typhoon

The Eurofighter is a modern fighter with IRIS-T missiles.

Strengths:

  • 6 IRIS-T missiles
  • IRIS-T locks at longer range than AIM-9
  • Can lock and attack 2 aircraft at the same time

Best use:
Fast air combat and long-range missile engagements.

F/A-18 Hornet

The Hornet has the best cannon among the standard fighters.

Strengths:

  • Cannon fires twice as fast as most aircraft
  • Takes longer to overheat
  • Strong allround combat aircraft

Best use:
Aggressive dogfighting with heavy cannon use.

Saab JAS 39 Gripen

The Gripen is especially strong against ships.

Strengths:

  • 6 guided glide bombs
  • Can lock enemy ships with an orange ship-lock
  • Glide bombs guide themselves toward locked ships

Best use:
Destroy carriers early, then finish the remaining aircraft.

A-10 Thunderbolt

The A-10 is a ground-attack aircraft, just like its real-world counterpart.

Strengths:

  • Extremely powerful cannon
  • Each cannon hit does much more damage than normal aircraft cannon hits
  • Cannon fires as fast as the Hornet’s cannon
  • Carries 4 guided glide bombs

Best use:
Ship attack, carrier destruction, and close-range heavy firepower.

F-35C Lightning II

The F-35C is a modern stealth-style aircraft and keeps a more realistic jet-like appearance compared to most of the paper-style player aircraft.

Strengths:

  • Strong modern fighter capabilities
  • Balanced air combat role
  • Good allround performance

Best use:
Flexible playstyle with modern fighter handling.

Enemy Aircraft

Enemy fighters and multirole aircraft are inspired by real aircraft models.
Their names appear during lock-on and after being shot down.

Unlike the player aircraft, the enemy aircraft models are visually more detailed and each type is designed to look different. Many of them are based on real fighter or carrier-capable aircraft.

Enemy aircraft can include:

  • fighters
  • multirole jets
  • helicopters
  • carrier-launched aircraft
  • large bomber bosses

Bomber Bosses

Every wave includes a large bomber boss.
Each boss is named after a real bomber or strike aircraft.

The bomber bosses are larger, tougher, and more dangerous than normal enemies. They are a major part of each wave and should not be ignored.

Enemy Carriers

Enemy carriers are one of the most important parts of the game.

They:

  • spawn at the beginning of each wave
  • launch enemy aircraft or helicopters every 30 seconds
  • keep launching enemies until destroyed
  • can be destroyed most effectively with bombs or glide bombs

Cannon fire can damage ships, but it takes a long time. Ships are meant to be destroyed mainly with bombs.

Your Own Carrier

Each game also includes your own friendly carrier.

It appears blue on the radar.

You can land on it or briefly touch it to resupply and repair your aircraft.

When you successfully land or touch your carrier, you receive:

  • full health
  • full missile loadout
  • full bomb or glide-bomb loadout
  • cooled-down cannon
  • repaired aircraft

The game gives the radio message:

“Getankt, neu bestückt und Repariert, Chef!”

Your own carrier can also be destroyed, including by friendly fire, so avoid bombing or shooting it by mistake.

Weapons

Cannon

Every aircraft has a cannon, but the cannon differs depending on the selected aircraft.

Important:

  • The cannon can overheat
  • Different aircraft have different fire rates
  • Some aircraft can fire longer before overheating
  • The A-10 cannon does especially high damage
  • The F/A-18 cannon fires very fast and overheats later

AIM-9

AIM-9 missiles are air-to-air missiles.

They require a lock before firing.
They are best used against enemy aircraft.

IRIS-T

IRIS-T missiles are used by the Eurofighter.

Compared to AIM-9:

  • longer lock range
  • can lock multiple targets depending on aircraft
  • excellent against aircraft

Glide Bombs

Glide bombs are used against ships.

They can lock ships with an orange lock box and then guide themselves toward the target.

Best against:

  • enemy carriers
  • ships

Radar

The radar helps identify threats and important objects.

Important radar colors:

  • enemy aircraft: hostile targets
  • enemy ships: hostile carrier targets
  • friendly carrier: blue

Use the radar often, because enemies can spawn from carriers far away.

Controls

Keyboard

  • W / Arrow Up: descend
  • S / Arrow Down: climb
  • A / Arrow Left: turn/roll left
  • D / Arrow Right: turn/roll right
  • Space: fire cannon
  • Tab / Right Mouse Button: fire AIM-9 / IRIS-T when locked
  • B: drop bomb or glide bomb, depending on aircraft
  • Shift: afterburner
  • M: mouse flight / pointer lock
  • Escape: open the start menu
  • F2: open the start menu
  • P: pause

Mouse

Mouse control is supported.

  • Move mouse left: steer left
  • Move mouse right: steer right
  • Move mouse up/down: pitch is inverted
  • Left click: fire cannon
  • Right click: fire AIM-9 / IRIS-T

Only vertical mouse movement is inverted. Left and right remain normal.

Landing Gear

The landing gear only deploys when you are close to your own carrier.
This makes it easier to recognize when you are in the correct area for landing and resupply.

Game Technology

The entire game is a single small HTML file, about 160 KB.

There are no image files, no external textures, and no prerecorded audio files.
The aircraft, ships, effects, textures, sounds, music, explosions, radar, HUD, and environment are all generated in the browser.

Everything is built procedurally using JavaScript, WebGL/Three.js, and WebAudio.

Final Advice

Destroying enemy aircraft wins the wave, but destroying enemy carriers controls the wave.

A good pilot watches three things at the same time:

  1. The aircraft already attacking you
  2. The carriers launching more enemies
  3. Your own carrier, which can repair and resupply you

Choose your aircraft based on your strategy:

  • F-22 or Eurofighter for air superiority
  • Gripen or A-10 for carrier hunting
  • Hornet or F-35C for flexible allround combat

Every aircraft can win, but each one rewards a different flying style.
